Questions And Answers
Getting started
What is Spinebloom?
A home for your reading. Reading keeps your books, with a timer, streaks and your favorite lines. Create turns those books into shelf images, stacks and videos to share. Play has daily book puzzles and the Cozy Bookshop game. Community has reviews, discussions and book clubs.
Do I need an account?
No. Everything except posting in the community works without one, and stays on your device. A review you write stays private, in your Journal. Signing in (just your email, no password) syncs your books and reading across devices and keeps them safe.
How do I add my books?
Search or scan on Reading → Today: Start puts a book on Today, Save keeps it for later. Or bring them all in on Create → Books, from Goodreads, StoryGraph, Libby, Kindle or Open Library, or paste a list (“Title by Author”). Every book lands on your Shelf.
Is there an iPad or Android app?
Not yet. The iPhone app runs on an iPad in an iPhone-sized window, and the website works on any phone or computer.
Where is The Lantern War?
It’s still being made, so it isn’t in the iPhone app yet. On the website, turn it on in Settings → Labs to try it early. Your progress is kept either way.
Reading
I read on a Kindle, which shows % not pages.
Tap More on the book in Reading → Today, then “Track by % (Kindle)”, or just type a percentage like 45% when you update. You can make % the default for new books in Settings → Reading.
How do streaks work?
Any day you read (timer, page update or a logged day) counts. One rest day in any seven doesn’t break your streak. Forgot to log? Tap a day in the week chart or “Log reading for a day”.
What’s Atmosphere?
Reading → Atmosphere (the tab at the bottom). Pick a scene (rainy window, castle, cozy café, deep space and 100 more) to keep open on your phone or a second screen while you read. Sound is optional, the screen stays on, and a timer can log the minutes to your reading when it ends. Bedtime is there too: a warm, dim screen and a wind-down timer, on its own or over any scene. No account needed.
Can I give quarter stars?
Yes. Tap − or + beside the stars to move a quarter (3¾). On the Shelf, Finished books can be sorted by rating and filtered by format: Print, E-book or Audiobook.
How do reading goals work?
Set books a year, books a month (optional) and minutes a day in Reading → Stats → Goals. Today then says whether you’re On Track, ahead, or what catches up. Prefer no pressure? Turn on Gentle goals in Settings → Reading.
How do I share my month?
Tap My Month In Books on Stats, on the Shelf, or on Today in a month’s first week. Pick Story or Post size, with or without stars, then save or share. Private books are counted but never shown.
What’s a re-read?
Start a book you’ve already finished and it’s counted as a re-read (#2, #3…), not a duplicate.
I lent a book to someone.
In Create → Books, tap “Lend” on the book. It stays with the book, so it shows on your Shelf (Reading → Shelf) and on every list until you mark it returned.
Where are my books kept?
On your Shelf (Reading → Shelf). A book you add anywhere (Today, Scan, an import, Create, a book page) goes there, and Create’s lists pick from it. Its rating, dates, where your copy is from, who has it and your Kindle highlights are kept once, so a change shows everywhere. Make Something turns them into an image.
Can I change many books at once?
Yes. Tap Select on Finished or Want To Read on the Shelf, tick the books, then add a tag, say where they’re from, or remove them. One Undo puts it all back.
Can I use Spinebloom without the community?
Yes. Nothing is posted unless you post it, and the community is there only if you want it. Mark a book “Just for me” (Reading → Today → More on the book) to keep it off your lists and shares, and turn on Gentle goals (no streaks) in Settings → Reading.
Is there a reading journal?
Reading → Journal. Write about a book with prompts for the start, middle and end, keep a who’s who for big casts, and hand out your own year-end awards. It’s private.
Can I track audiobooks?
Set a book’s format to Audiobook (Reading → Today → More on the book), then update with the time listened (like 3:45), the length and your playback speed: the timer then fills in where you are. Stats split print, e-book and audio. If most of your books are audiobooks (Settings → Reading), Libro.fm and Borrow It come first.
Can I scan a book’s barcode?
Yes: Scan A Barcode, beside the search on Reading → Today. Point your camera at the barcode on the back and it’s looked up on Open Library. You can type the ISBN instead.
Can Spinebloom remind me to read?
Settings → Reminders: pick a time and days. In the iPhone app they just work. On the website on an iPhone, add Spinebloom to your home screen first (Share → Add to Home Screen).
Can I choose which notifications I get?
Yes. Settings → Notifications (signed in) has a switch for each kind: likes, comments, mentions, friends, clubs, challenges and cheers. Settings → Reminders picks the reading, puzzle and club reminders.
Can I borrow books from my library?
“Borrow it” sits next to “Get it” on a book. Set your library in Settings → Your library (its Libby name, like nypl) to open the book there; otherwise it finds libraries near you through WorldCat.
Where do “Get it” links go?
To Bookshop.org in the US and Booksellers.ca in Canada (Les libraires in French). Pick another shop, e-book store or audiobook app in Settings → Buying Books.
Is there an easier font to read?
Settings → Accessibility → Easy-Read Font (Atkinson Hyperlegible), made to tell letters apart. Reading Spacing adds room between lines too.
Can I save quotes from a page?
Yes: “+ Quote” on a book. On some devices you can photograph the page and copy the text. A random saved quote shows on Home each day.
Community
How do spoilers work?
Turn on the spoiler switch when you post (and tag the book, so others can mute or shield it). In clubs, post in the right section. If you say which page a post talks about from, readers who haven’t got there yet see it covered: that’s the spoiler shield. Posts about a book that came out less than 14 days ago, or isn’t out yet, are covered automatically.
Why can’t I see some books or posts?
Mature (18+) content is hidden unless you’re 18 or over and turn it on in Settings → Content on the website; the iPhone app follows that choice. In the UK it stays off for now. Posts with your muted words, and from people you’ve blocked, are hidden too.
How do challenges work?
Community → Challenges. Join an official one (bingo, passage hunts and more) or start one and invite friends by username: everyone gets the same tasks and a leaderboard keeps score. Tap a task when you’ve done it; proof (the book, a line, a photo of the page) is optional. Or dare a friend to one thing by a deadline.
How do I make what someone else posted?
Tap Make Your Own on their post (in the feed, or Create → Ideas). Spinebloom opens the same image or video style, ready to make with your own books. No books yet? Add some first and it carries on.
How do I share what I made with the community?
Tap Post on an image in Create → Images, or on a finished video in Create → Videos. Others see it with a Make your own button. Your book list isn’t shared, only that picture.
What’s Together?
Community → Together: read-together rooms (see who’s reading right now and cheer them on), reading sprints (read for a set time with others, then share your pages), buddy reads and finding a reading buddy.
How do buddy reads work?
Start one from Together or a book’s page: a small private club for you and up to 8 friends, with the book split into sections. With “write first” on, you see your friends’ thoughts on a section only after you’ve posted your own.
What are margin notes?
Short reactions pinned to a place in a book. You only see notes up to where you are; the rest wait until you get there. Tap Margin Notes on a book in Reading → Today, or on the book’s page.
Can my friends see what I’m reading?
Only if you choose: Edit profile → “What I’m reading now visible to”. They can then cheer you on. Books marked “Just for me” never show.
How do I mention someone?
Type @ and their username in a post or comment. They get a notification (in a club, only if they’re a member).
How do I become a verified author?
Send us a message from Menu → Send feedback, with a link to your official website or account. Once verified you get a badge and can host Q&As on your books’ pages.
How do I join a club with a code?
Community → Clubs → “Have a club code?”: type the six letters and numbers (like K7M-2QP), or scan the club’s QR code with your phone’s camera. You need to be signed in. Codes stop working when the club’s organizer stops the link.
What do club stats show?
On a club’s Schedule tab: members, books finished together, who’s on track for the section that’s due, and reading time together. Your reading time only counts if you switch on “Count my reading time”, only a daily total is shared, and the club sees it only once three other members count theirs, so nobody’s time can be picked out.
Can I see a book’s film or series?
A book’s page lists its films and series under Adapted As, when Wikidata knows them.
How do book clubs work?
Start or join a club in Community → Clubs. Clubs read one book at a time, split into sections, and discussions of each section unlock when you mark that you’ve got there.
The Cozy Bookshop
Where did the tray go?
It’s gone, so the board stays clear by merging, selling and the Bag. What was in it went into your Bag, and slots you bought were paid back in coins.
What can I spend coins on?
Pets and pet clothes, things for Your Cozy Corner from its shop, and from the Gallery on, a Press (up to two a day) that lifts a thing on the board up a level without a pair.
Where are Look Around and The Cat?
In Walk To, on the dock under the board.
Safety
Someone is being unkind or posted something wrong.
Use “Report” on the post, comment, message or profile. A moderator reviews every report, and “Someone may be at risk” goes first. You can also block someone from their profile: they won’t see your posts and you won’t see theirs. More in the Safety Center on this page.
Something of mine was hidden. Why?
The Safety Center on this page says why, and you can appeal once.
I’m under 18. Who can contact me?
Adults you aren’t friends with can’t send you friend requests, comment on your posts, send you recommendations or find you in search. You can change this in the Safety Center.
Why can’t I open Community?
In Australia, the law keeps social media for readers 16 and over, so Community opens at 16. Reading, Create, Play and the Cozy Bookshop are all yours.
Is my reading private?
Yes. Your books, reading, notes and lists are only yours. Posts and reviews you write are public, and so are stats on your profile if you turn them on.
Does Spinebloom use AI?
Yes, in two places. AI tools helped build the app and write some of its text and story. In the app itself, one automatic check flags posts that look like harassment or hate, and a moderator decides. Spinebloom never writes your posts, reviews or journal entries, never uses image generators, and never uses what you write to train AI.
Account and data
How do I move to a new phone?
Sign in with the same email on the new phone and everything syncs over.
I don’t have an account. How do I keep my books safe?
Settings → Your Data → Download A Backup: one file with your books, reading, journal and settings. Restore it on any device. Today reminds you once a month.
Can I take my books to another app?
Yes. Settings → Your Data → Export My Reading (CSV) makes a file in Goodreads’ format, which Goodreads and StoryGraph import. Goodreads keeps whole stars only.
How do I get a copy of my data, or delete my account?
Settings → Your Data, and Account. Deleting is permanent and removes everything on our side. Without the app, use Delete Your Account on this page.
What happens to my books if Spinebloom ever closes?
You’d hear from us in the app (and by email if you have an account) at least 60 days before. Export My Reading (CSV) in Settings → Your Data keeps working until the last day, so your books leave with you.
When something goes wrong
Something isn’t working. What do I do?
Tap Something’s Wrong on this page. It adds your app version and device for you, so we can find the problem faster. We read every message.
Is Spinebloom down?
Spinebloom Status on this page checks for you. Your reading always saves on your device first, so nothing is lost while we can’t be reached; it syncs when we’re back.
